Mewn Picil

Blossoming Clwyd preserve producer Mewn Picil brings a touch of local sweetness and spice to the dinner table with a range preserves.

Administration officer, Bethan Batty has been making jams and chutneys for friends and family for a number of years. She then ventured into selling her products at local fairs and Christmas markets, which encouraged her to set up her business.

With Cywain’s help, Mewn Picil is taking its next business steps.

Llansannan based Bethan makes her preserves in small batches using local produce as it comes into season with main production usually starting in September and running through to December.

With labelling and technical assistance from Coleg Menai Food Technology Centre in Llangefni, and branding support from Cywain, Mewn Picil has launched a bi-lingual range of preserves.

Sweet Chilli Chutney, Apple Chutney, Beetroot Chutney, Beetroot & Orange Chutney, Damson Jam, and Blackberry & Apple Jam are just a few of the seasonal flavours, and there are also plans to expand the range to include flavoured alcohol – ‘Fodca’.

“Cywain has helped me immensely, and without their support, I would not have been able to grow my business,” says Bethan.

“They put me in contact with the all the right people such as the Food Technology Centre at Coleg Menai who tested my products and made sure my labelling was right. Cywain’s advised me on marketing and invited me to the Royal Welsh Winter Fair – something I would not have been able to do on my own.”

Says Cywain North East Wales Development Manager, Llior Radford, “Mewn Picil has received strong Cywain support to strengthen trade presence to encourage more sales at events and food shows.

“There has been support too in addressing new markets and how to sell Mewn Picil through local independent retailers. The company is looking to launch a website and introduce a tasty flavoured 'fodca' onto the market this year.”
